In Penang, Malaysia, the tradition of worshipping the Chinese deity “Ghost God Guardian” Da Shi Ye has been preserved for centuries. This month-long event is held annually during the seventh lunar month and is a unique part of Penang's and the Chinese community's Ghost Festival cultural celebrations. The culmination of the festival involves burning a paper effigy of Dàshì Yé, with the belief that this ritual sends him back to his original world.
