Flora, goddess of spring and fertility, is associated here with a decomposing tree trunk. Even in decay, trees continue to generate life. There is no beginning and no end—only a continuous cycle of life. By replacing advertising posters in the Paris subway with my own images, this work reclaims a public space long appropriated by advertising. Filles du Calvaire (“Daughters of Calvary”) refers to a religious order named after Calvary, the hill of Christ’s crucifixion. It may also be the hill on which Flora stands.
