The Guardians of Beigang: Spirits of Zhenxuantang

This series captures the solemnity and intricate artistry of the "Eight Generals" (Ba Jia Jiang) from the Beigang Zhenxuantang, one of Taiwan’s most iconic folk religious traditions. More than mere performers, these individuals undergo a sacred transformation, embodying deities through meticulously painted faces, ornate costumes, and rigorous ritualistic movements. Through my lens, I aim to preserve the raw intensity and spiritual heritage of these guardians as they protect the community during temple processions. This project explores the intersection of human devotion and divine persona, highlighting the cultural significance of face-painting traditions that have been passed down through generations. Each portrait serves as a visual testament to the faith, discipline, and profound cultural identity that define this timeless tradition in modern Taiwan.
