Echoes of Self is an ongoing fine art photographic project that explores memory, identity, belonging, and the search for purpose through self-portraiture in the landscape. Inspired by the Japanese concept of Ikigai, a life of meaning and fulfillment, the series considers how our experiences shape who we become and how our relationship with the natural world can reveal aspects of ourselves that words cannot express. Created with a 4×5-inch large-format camera using hand-coated nineteenth-century dry glass plates, each photograph is made through a slow, deliberate process that demands patience, vulnerability, and presence. Long exposures record the passage of time as much as the subject itself, allowing the body to exist between stillness and movement, presence and absence. Rather than functioning as autobiographical portraits, these self-representations become stand-ins for the universal human experience, inviting viewers to project their own memories, emotions, and questions onto the work. The landscape is not simply a backdrop but an active participant in the narrative. Trees, water, stone, earth, and changing horizons become visual metaphors for growth, resilience, uncertainty, loss, renewal, and belonging. Human and environment are presented as inseparable, reflecting the continuous dialogue between inner life and the natural world. Central to the project is the deliberate introduction of imperfections into the dry plate process. Bubbles, streaks, light leaks, and chemical marks are intentionally created by the artist rather than accepted as accidental flaws. These interventions symbolize the scars, disruptions, and unexpected moments that shape every life. Just as memory is incomplete and identity is continually evolving, each plate bears traces of both intention and chance, creating images that resist perfection while embracing authenticity. Spanning seven interconnected chapters, Echoes of Self forms a visual meditation on what it means to exist, to remember, and to belong. By combining historical photographic processes, performance, and landscape, the project bridges past and present while inviting quiet contemplation. It encourages viewers to reflect not on the artist’s life but on their own journeys through memory, impermanence, and the enduring search for meaning.
