Gilded Wings

A split second before I took this image, this Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill dug up an insect and tossed it in the air, positioning it for a clean catch and an effortless gulp. The photograph freezes the most fleeting instant of that sequence—a split second between release and recapture. What first appears to be an insect’s daring escape is, in fact, the carefully controlled feeding action of a Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill. The hornbill’s upward gaze, extended neck and open bill reveal its complete concentration. Even the tiny prey seems suspended in anticipation, creating a visual connection between hunter and meal across the narrow space that separates them. “Aerial Appetizer” celebrates more than a successful meal. It reveals the coordination, adaptability and personality of a familiar African bird, transforming a routine act of feeding into a moment of suspense.
