Where Morning Mirrors the Wild

I photographed this male lechwe at sunrise, standing in the shallow water of the Okavango Delta as the first light reached across the landscape. The warm light on his coat and the unusually clear reflection beneath him make the animal and his mirrored form seem equally present, connecting the subject with the wetland habitat that defines the species. Lechwe are closely adapted to seasonally flooded environments. Their elongated hooves and powerful hindquarters help them move through marshy ground and shallow water. This individual’s confident stance in his natural habitat highlights that close relationship. The calm surface lasted only briefly; a step, a breeze, or a change in direction could have broken the reflection. The title “Where Morning Mirrors the Wild” reflects the image’s dual character as both a wildlife portrait and a study of place. It captures a quiet encounter at the beginning of the day, when the wetland was still and the lechwe appeared completely at home within it.
