Startled Stripes

From the concealed stillness of a bunker blind in the Kalahari, I watched this zebra approach the waterhole for a much-needed drink. In an instant, something unseen startled it. The zebra recoiled, water spilling from its mouth as its hooves broke the surface and sent droplets into the air. The low vantage point placed me almost at water level, transforming a fleeting reaction into a study of movement, instinct and texture. The frozen spray echoes the animal’s stripes, while its reflection anchors the sudden burst of energy. At a waterhole, vulnerability and vigilance exist side by side; even the simple act of drinking demands constant awareness. This frame captures the split second when thirst gave way to survival instinct.
