Landscape in Passing

Landscape in Passing was photographed from within movement. Trees, roadside vegetation and open terrain are transformed by the passing camera into horizontal traces, blurred masses and fleeting concentrations of light and shadow. The photograph does not approach landscape as a stable counterpart waiting to be recorded. Instead, it captures the particular condition in which contemporary landscapes are so often experienced: through transit. The camera and the landscape move in relation to one another, and the resulting motion blur makes that unstable encounter visible. Individual forms briefly emerge before being absorbed again into the lateral flow of the image. Trees retain enough presence to anchor the scene in the physical world, yet their contours stretch and overlap until landscape begins to approach abstraction. This transformation is not intended to conceal place but to describe another way of perceiving it. From a moving vehicle, the eye continually attempts to grasp environments that disappear before they can be fully examined. Photography normally promises to arrest such disappearance; here, it preserves the disappearance itself. The monochrome treatment concentrates attention on rhythm, speed and tonal structure. Dark vegetation and luminous stretches of terrain form successive bands across the frame, producing an image simultaneously spatial and kinetic. Landscape in Passing considers landscape as an experience defined by transience. The place remains real, but its photographic form exists precisely because it could not be held still.
