A five-photograph portrait of Grace Jones on stage, "States of Grace" explores the shifting emotional and theatrical states of a performer. Against a blue background, Jones appears in a striking red cloak—a sculptural flash of crimson. The sequence moves from inward stillness towards release. Contemplative — Jones stands almost motionless, her head slightly bowed and her expression inward. The red cloak gathers around her like a ceremonial garment, while the cool blue surrounding her creates a sense of solitude and suspended time. Watchful — Her gaze rises toward the audience, direct and alert. The cloak frames her face and shoulders, its folds suggesting both protection and latent power. She seems to be observing the room before deciding what to reveal. Defiant — Jones' posture is uncompromising. The red cloak spreads dramatically around her, becoming almost armour-like against the blue field. This is the most confrontational image in the series: controlled, powerful and unapologetic. Exultant — Her body opens outward as she lifts her arms and the cloak catches the movement. Red fabric appears to radiate from her against the blue background. Her expression conveys triumph and release. Transcendant — In the final photograph, Jones seems to move beyond the performance itself. The cloak rises and envelops her, while her face and posture acquire a stillness, leaving Jones suspended somewhere between human performer and apparition.
