‘Dance of the Fire Dragon’ is a photographic tribute to one of Hong Kong’s most visceral and mesmerizing cultural spectacles. This series captures the fiery Mid-Autumn festivities during the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, immortalising a local tradition that has burned brightly for over 140 years. Born in the late 19th century, the ritual began as a desperate plea. Legend holds that villagers first constructed a massive dragon from pearl grass and thousands of burning incense sticks, parading it through the streets with roaring firecrackers to eradicate a devastating plague. Today, the ritual survives not out of fear, but as a fierce, joyous celebration of heritage and community resilience. This gallery transcends mere documentation; it captures cinematic humanity. Through the swirling haze of incense smoke and the violent sparks of exploding firecrackers, these images focus intently on the people beneath the beast. The lens highlights the strained muscles of the dragon bearers carrying the immense, glowing creature, their glistening sweat illuminated by the amber glow of the embers. It frames the spellbound faces of onlookers pressed against the barricades, mesmerized by the primal energy filling their streets.
