Surviving Ornament is a series of analog photographs made in Pointe-Saint-Charles, one of Montréal’s oldest working-class neighbourhoods. Once shaped by industry, the Lachine Canal and successive waves of urban development, the area still preserves a remarkable concentration of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century residential architecture. The series focuses on oriel windows, projecting window structures that became a distinctive feature of many urban façades during this period. Beyond their practical role in bringing more light into interiors and expanding the view toward the street, oriels also became an important surface for architectural ornament. Their woodwork, mouldings, cornices and painted details reveal both craftsmanship and social aspiration. Photographed on film, these façades are rendered with a material softness and visible grain that complement their aged surfaces. The analog process is not used here as nostalgia, but as a way of reinforcing the physical presence of time. This work forms part of my broader artistic mission: to explore cultural responsibility through architecture, and to reveal the fragile or majestic traces that built heritage leaves in the urban landscape. In Pointe-Saint-Charles, ornament survives not as decoration alone, but as evidence of labour, continuity and memory.
