Perched on the rugged cliffs of Botallack in Cornwall, England, these 19th-century engine houses are enduring remnants of the region’s historic tin-mining industry. I was drawn to the extraordinary way the weathered buildings appear to cling to the coastline, standing exposed above the Atlantic. Using a long exposure to soften the movement of the sea below, I wanted to capture the dramatic relationship between the architecture and its wild coastal setting, and the sense of history these structures bring to a landscape that has surrounded them for generations.
