Captured in Zurich, Switzerland, this black-and-white photograph shows two children lying along the edge of a dam, completely absorbed in the swans below. On either side, two adults watch the children rather than the water. This contrast creates two simultaneous directions of attention: the children look outward with curiosity, while the adults look toward them with care. The photograph holds childhood and adulthood within the same frame, suggesting how wonder gradually gives way to watchfulness. There is also something nostalgic in the scene. The children are unaware of being watched, just as they may be unaware of how temporary this kind of uncomplicated fascination can be.
