Attendance

A photograph can record presence while making a person almost disappear. In Attendance, a long exposure renders visitors as translucent traces beneath a solid torii. Their bodies overlap, lose their edges, and merge with the space around them. The architecture remains sharply defined. I use this difference to bring two scales of time into a single frame: the brief passage of individual lives and the longer duration embodied by a historic structure. The people were physically there, yet the image gives them less visual certainty than the objects surrounding them. Their fading outlines become evidence of movement and of time spent within the frame. The title borrows a word used to register who was present. Here, that record is incomplete. We can see that people came, but their individual identities slip beyond recognition. The still architecture allows these fragile traces to become visible. Through that relationship, the photograph asks how much of a life an image can hold, and what remains of our presence after we have moved on.
