Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, Okayama, 2026 Kurashiki was a shogunate port, and rice was stored in warehouses along its canal. Walls like this one — square tiles set in raised white plaster, a technique called namako — were made to resist fire and weather. The pattern earned its beauty by doing a job. In the frame the wall takes almost everything, and a scooter takes the rest. I did not see who parked it. But with the ground sunk in shadow, the wall reads to me as still doing what it was built for: keeping something small, for a while. Single exposure. Nothing removed, nothing added.
