Majestic Islands

This aerial frame is made at that red-hot sunset hour when the light is low, thick, and almost physical. Hong Kong Island stacks in the first plane; the Kowloon Peninsula follows; then the ridges keep going — range behind range — until the city is no longer a skyline but a continuous landform. Buildings, harbour, hills and the far mountains read as one terrain. Nature does not sit behind the metropolis. It runs through it and beyond it. They are layers of the same place. Towers take the colour of the sky. Slopes take the colour of the city. The harbour becomes a dark seam rather than a border. What looks majestic is not only scale. It is continuity: urban density folding into ridge, ridge folding into more city, more green, more distance, until the eye cannot decide where architecture stops and the territory begins. The photograph is a portrait of Hong Kong as a single body — hot, layered, and briefly unified by the last light of summer.
