There is an old English word for letting your mind drift: woolgathering. It comes from the shepherds' wives who wandered the hills picking tufts of wool off hedges and thorns, a slow, aimless task that left plenty of room for daydreams. Somewhere along the way the word became literal. The soft fuzz of the knit met the soft fuzz of her body, two kinds of wool in the same grey light. A woman gathering her thoughts, gathered in wool.
