Iceland
Marco Di Marco is a Sicilian visual journalist based in Reykjavík, Iceland. He has covered eruptions of Mount Etna in Sicily for local news agencies since 2011. After moving to Iceland in 2018, he began freelancing for The Associated Press (AP). Since 2021, he has covered volcanic eruptions and other major news in Iceland for AP, producing both photos and video. He studied geology and volcanology at the University of Catania; that background helps him understand the phenomena he documents and work more efficiently and safely in the field. His work has been published by major newspapers and TV outlets worldwide, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME Magazine, CNN, BBC, ABC, and CBS. In 2024, his coverage of the Svartsengi eruption was featured in several Photos of the Year galleries: TIME’s Top 10 (and Top 100) Photos of 2024 “Enduring Images of 2024,” The Washington Post “The Photographs that Defined 2024,” The Guardian “Top 25 News Photos of 2024,” The Atlantic “The Year in Pictures,” The Economist “100 Photos of 2024,” The Associated Press. His coverage of the February eruption won AP’s Best of the Week; his coverage of the November 2024 eruption received an honorable mention.
