A black-winged stilt moves through shallow water, its vivid red legs and dark wings standing out against the bright, nearly featureless surroundings. The high-key treatment removes most of the wetland’s visual detail, drawing attention to the bird’s distinctive shape, careful stride and reflection. I chose a generous amount of negative space to convey the openness and quiet of the habitat, while the small traces of vegetation provide a subtle sense of place. By simplifying the scene, the image focuses on the stilt’s elegance and the impression that it is walking across light itself.
