Dust in the Wind

Photographed at Making Pegasus Ranch, Dust in the Wind captures an unscripted moment when a Gypsy cross broke away from the herd and ran through a cloud of dust. For several seconds, the horse appeared to be heading directly toward me before turning and rejoining the others. The horse’s distinctive black-and-white markings separate it from the muted forms of the herd behind. Its position in the open foreground emphasizes its brief independence, while the darker horses remain partially obscured by dust. I chose this frame because it captures both the power of the individual horse and its connection to the larger group. The dust, kicked up naturally by the running herd, simplified the background and gave the scene a strong sense of motion and atmosphere. What began as a routine movement of horses across the ranch became a brief and memorable moment—one horse stepping apart before returning to where it belonged.
