Built to Soar

Built to Soar was photographed in Milwaukee during the return trip after taking my son to the University of Wisconsin–Madison to begin his freshman year. The building’s sweeping curves, repeating fins, and upward-reaching geometry immediately suggested flight. Captured on a mobile phone from a low angle, the panoramic composition isolates the structure against an expansive sky, allowing architecture to become a metaphor for aspiration. For me, the image carries a personal meaning. After leaving a young person at the beginning of his college journey, the form of the building felt symbolic—a reminder of growth, independence, and the hope that the next generation will rise beyond what came before. Rather than simply documenting architecture, Built to Soar reflects a parent’s quiet wish: to see a child take flight.
