Citrinitas

Citrinitas turns a condensation-covered pane of glass into a temporary writing surface. Moisture gathers as droplets, films and irregular channels while light passes through and across them, revealing structures that would otherwise remain almost invisible. Among these marks are delicate trails left by snails moving over the damp glass. They intersect with condensation, rivulets and traces of evaporation to form an accidental script: lines created without drawing and patterns produced without deliberate design. The photograph exists at the boundary between transparency and opacity. The glass should allow the world beyond it to be seen, yet moisture interrupts that function. Exterior forms become indistinct while the normally invisible surface itself moves to the foreground. Light effectively begins to write upon the pane. Yellow is central to this transformation. The title refers to citrinitas, the alchemical stage traditionally associated with yellowing, illumination and the emergence of light. Here, yellow is not applied as symbolic decoration; it arises through illumination and becomes the dominant state through which the material surface is perceived. The image therefore combines several acts of involuntary mark-making: water condenses, an animal crosses the surface, light reveals what remains. Photography enters only at the final stage, preserving an arrangement that is already changing through evaporation. Citrinitas finds a fleeting form of calligraphy in ordinary material processes. The glass becomes less a window onto the world than a surface on which water, movement and light briefly leave their own notation.
