Drift Field

Drift Field begins with a rigid system of repeated lines and observes the moment when that order starts to move. Light passing through blinds meets a curved architectural surface, causing an otherwise regular pattern to bend, separate and gradually lose alignment. The photograph reduces the scene to a restrained vocabulary of line, surface, light and shadow. On one side, repetition remains comparatively stable; on the other, the same linear rhythm is displaced by curvature and projection. The transition between them creates the impression of a visual field slipping out of registration. Rather than using architecture as a subject in itself, Drift Field examines how perception responds when a simple structure can no longer remain completely coherent. Small variations become decisive. Lines widen, soften and diverge; depth emerges from an image that initially appears almost flat. The monochrome treatment intensifies this reduction, removing descriptive colour and allowing differences in luminosity, rhythm and texture to determine the composition. The photograph was created in-camera as a single exposure. Its apparent abstraction results from the actual interaction between blinds, projected light and architectural surface rather than from compositing. Drift Field occupies a threshold between order and instability. Nothing dramatic occurs, yet the smallest displacement is sufficient to transform a familiar spatial situation into a field whose geometry seems quietly to drift.
