Known as 龍門 (dragon gates), these voids are built into coastal high-rises so spirit dragons can fly unimpeded from mountain to sea, ensuring good fortune. According to traditional Chinese Feng Shui principles, the lush mountains behind the city are home to legendary dragons that carry positive energy, known as qi. These creatures are believed to routinely descend from the peaks to the water to drink and bathe. As Hong Kong experienced a rapid boom in high-density waterfront development, massive walls of concrete threatened to sever these vital spiritual pathways. To avoid angering the dragons and inviting misfortune upon the residents, developers began integrating deliberate, multi-story holes into the center of new residential blocks. This architectural compromise allows the qi to flow freely through the structures, preserving harmony and prosperity for the community. This series highlights this fascinating blend of ancient culture and modern design. The compositions draw the viewer through imposing layers of repetitive concrete to reveal tranquil waters, solitary ships, and distant islands. By using these architectural voids to frame various scenes and subjects, the photographs contrast the overwhelming mass of these dense residential buildings with the serene, open views behind them.
