Verdant Current is a single photographic work from Marcel van Beek’s series After Green – The Land Unravels, but it is conceived to stand independently as an image of ecological abundance already under pressure. Created through a single in-camera exposure using intentional camera movement, the photograph transforms trunks and foliage into radiant green currents that appear to surge towards and away from a luminous centre. The image begins with a recognisable woodland. Trees, leaves and depth remain present, yet the camera’s movement destabilises the spatial order that would normally make the scene secure. Vegetation becomes directional energy; trunks stretch, crowns loosen and the forest starts to behave less like fixed terrain than like a field in motion. The photograph therefore holds two apparently contradictory states at once: vitality and instability. Green is crucial to the work. It is deliberately intense, even seductive, and resists the familiar visual shorthand in which environmental fragility must appear damaged, dry or depleted. Verdant Current suggests instead that ecological stress can exist beneath surfaces that still seem lush and alive. The work alludes to cumulative anthropogenic pressures on landscapes — fragmentation, climatic stress and declining resilience — without illustrating one specific event or location. Intentional camera movement is not used here simply as an expressive style. Photography conventionally stabilises a fraction of time; van Beek uses the exposure to work against that expectation. The camera becomes physically involved in the subject, making the act of seeing itself unstable. Recognition remains possible, but no longer effortless. The work occupies the threshold between landscape and abstraction. It is important that the forest does not disappear completely. The viewer can still identify what is present, while simultaneously experiencing its coherence beginning to loosen. Verdant Current therefore proposes instability not as spectacle, but as something already embedded within apparent abundance: a landscape still green, still beautiful, and already beginning to shift.
