Located on the margins of modern Taipei, Shezidao remains the city’s last hidden paradise, preserving a century-old, fiercely vibrant grassroots culture. Every year, the local community holds the "Nong Tudigong" (Bombing the Earth God) ritual. However, this is not merely a traditional folk parade; it is a chaotic, intense crucible of fire, smoke, and flesh. "Firecracker Tattoos: The Imprint of Devotion" is a documentary photography series that moves beyond the spectacular visual of aggressive firework displays. Instead, it intimately explores the physical toll and the raw devotion of the local warriors—everyday factory workers and family men—who use their own bodies to shield the deity and their land. During the ritual, their existing ink tattoos are violently yet beautifully overlaid by a new, more profound mark: the "Firecracker Tattoos." The lingering soot, the scorching heat, and the blisters left by thousands of exploding firecrackers are never seen as mere injuries. Akin to holy stigmata, these burns are vulnerable, sacred imprints of bravery. Through a woman's lens, this project reveals a deep tenderness amidst the hyper-masculine inferno. It captures a poignant visual narrative about finding spiritual transcendence through immense physical pain, and establishing an unbreakable community bond through shared collective risk.
