On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse transformed the evening sky above the thousand-year-old fortress of Gormaz, in the province of Soria, Castilla y León, on the Castilian plateau above the Duero valley. The location was meticulously selected long before the event, taking into account the path of totality, the position and altitude of the setting Sun, local topography, the geometry required to align the eclipse with the fortress, and the likelihood of clear summer skies. Gormaz offered an exceptional combination: a position within the path of totality, an elevated and open landscape, and a monumental silhouette that could be aligned with the eclipsed Sun only a few degrees above the western horizon. The fortress itself added another dimension to the choice. Built in its present form in the 10th century and extending along a prominent ridge above the Duero valley, Gormaz has dominated this landscape for more than a millennium. Its long crenellated walls provided both a terrestrial reference and a graphic foreground for an astronomical event occurring on an entirely different scale. This five-image series follows the eclipse through changing perspectives, moving between close views of the Sun and wider frames in which the fortress becomes part of the event. The sequence records the black lunar disc, the solar corona, pink prominences and the sudden brilliance of the diamond-ring effect. Because the eclipsed Sun was so low, small movements of the camera substantially changed its apparent relationship with the battlements. Repositioning during the brief event allowed the geometry between observer, fortress and eclipse to evolve from frame to frame. Optical flare and the intense glow of the returning photosphere were retained where they formed part of the visual experience rather than being treated simply as imperfections. Edge of Totality is both a record of a fleeting astronomical phenomenon and a study of scale and alignment: the Moon, the Sun, a thousand-year-old human structure, and the photographer briefly brought onto a single line of sight.
