Rooted Futures

In this imagined future, the body is no longer entirely biological. These women inhabit transparent, engineered forms sustained by living root systems. Beneath glass and metal, the roots carry what cannot be mechanically reproduced: memory, ancestry, attachment and the quiet accumulation of a life. A flower opens above each heart, making the inner self visible. Although they share a transformed existence, the women do not share a single design. Their faces, ethnic identities, gestures, flowers and surroundings remain distinct, reflecting a future in which technological change has not erased individuality. Nature is not presented as technology’s opposite; it lives within the machinery and gives it meaning. Rooted Futures asks what remains human when the familiar body can be replaced. Its answer lies not in flesh, but in continuity—the roots we inherit, the selves we cultivate and what we choose to offer one another.
